Mike Curren – 100,000 Mile Man

Our first featured rider is Mike Curren.  In June 2010 Mike celebrated his 100,000 mile on a bike with a ride to Cayucos.  Over 75 people stopped in to Kelly's Coffee Shop to congratulate him and he was named "Hercules" when awarded an antique Hercules crank to hang around his neck.

Mike is 64 years old.  In 1996 while playing tennis, Mike had a stroke, his arm became limp and he couldn't speak.  Previously he was only cycling occasionally but found the exercise bike was now his best bet for exercise and would strap his hand to the bike.  Seven months later he road 13 miles around Los Osos.  When the SLO Bike club challenged its members to ride 2000 miles in the year 2000 Mike became intrigued.  He rode 20 Centuries that year as well as his first Double Century "Route 66" completing a total of 8,609 miles.

In the past 10 years Mike completed 40 double centuries and 3 infamous Death Rides and in 2004 rode a total of 12,090 miles.  When asked about his journey, Mike was grateful for his wife Liz, also a cyclist, who supported and sagged for him. He told us his favorite rides were the Death Valley Ride by moonlight with buddies Jay Johnson, Mark Martinez, and Kathy Ruiz; the Grand Tour in Malibu; and the Knoxville Double with its great organizer Scott Halverson.  Oh yeah, the Solvang Spring Double- " I felt good on that one" he said with a smile.

Mike enjoys completing and setting new goals.  He recommends doing double centuries, " You get to see Calif. in a different way and meet lots of nice people".  He's been inspired by David Nakai and Tom Fante who have been very encouraging.  So whats next for Mike?  His goal is to reach 50 Centuries!  Everyone at the shop enjoys it when Mike comes in with news of his adventures on the road and wish him luck with his goals.  Go Hercules!
